Who are we?

The KHA committee consists of the Chair, Secretary and Treasurer who are assisted by a membership secretary and volunteers from the members. The committee currently consists of

CHAIR : Richard Croft, I was formerly Head of Geography at Queen Mary’s College in Basingstoke but am now retired. I am currently writing a local history of Kingsclere and  working on the archive with Edward and Jean Chapman

SECRETARY Mike Leah, I am a founder member of the Association and have been Secretary or Chairman for as long as I can remember! I have a general interest in local history and modern history, particularly WW II.

TREASURER : Gareth Martin, I have lived in Kingsclere for 18 years, with strong interests in photography, vintage transport and industrial history, particularly during the Victorian and Edwardian era. More recently I have been drawn in to our fascinating local history, and joined the KHA to contribute and learn further.

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY :  Les Hensman

Committee Members

Janet Bond : I was Chairman of the Berkshire Archaeological Trust for eight years succeeding Professor Fulford, trustee of the Trust for Wessex archaeology,  Councillor with responsibility for history and archaeology  on Reading Borough Council, Vice President of the Friends of Reading Abbey, and co author of a small book on a section of Reading’s history.

I was brought up in Wales, this gave me a very cultural background in addition to a good education. Language, music and history were very important.I have ancient records on my family dating back to 1795. I enjoy being part of the village and working on the committee.

  1. C/o Richard Croft. HI there. my name is Gavin Mayhew and I am trying to contact Shirley Croft formally known as Austen. She was a bridesmaid at our wedding in Jamaica, 1975. We are having our 40th wedding anniversary in January and would like to invite Shirley. If you are or were related by marriage I would be very grateful if you could ask her to contact me on 01388 517308. Thanks you for your time. Gavin

  3. I am preparing a talk in the development of archaeology in Britain for a couple of local societies in the north London/Herts area. As part of this I am looking into the year each society/group I can identify was founded in, so it would be great if you could let me know the year the Kingsclere Heritage Association was founded in, please. Many thanks, Robin Densem.

  6. Hello, I am a retired teacher in Georgetown, Massachusetts, USA and have traced ancestors through MyHeritage.com. The earliest I’ve found is William Buxy, 1687-1762 from Sparsholt Hants who married in 1713 Eleanor Gamon 1689-1765 of Kingsclere Hant and had seven children born there in Kingsclere between 1714 and 1733. I’m interested in whether anyone from that line still lives in Kingsclere, and would appreciate any links you might provide. Thank you for any time you may have given to this request.

    i have a website at http://www.beyondoldwindows.com.

    Sincerely,
Terry Crawford Palardy, granddaughter of Mary Buxey, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Amazed and so delighted. Wish i was close enough to help. I went to school with Jean. Please let me know when your book is published.
